Paramagnetism of Si ( 111 ) - 7 × 7

Surface-sensitive second-harmonic generation, with the proper choice of symmetry, has demonstrated an extremely high sensitivity for detecting surface magnetization on Si(111)-7×7 induced by an external magnetic field of 10 T. Electron spins at the dangling bonds are suggested to be responsible for the observed magnetization of surfaces of nonmagnetic semiconductors. The temperature dependence of the magnetization indicates the existence of electron spin with the density of a fractional monolayer on the clean Si(111)-7×7 surface.
